Wood Meanings: The Living Energy of Our Materials

The Soul of the Forest

In my studio, I don't see wood as just a medium; I see it as a living record of time and energy. When I select a piece of Black Walnut or Maple, I am choosing the "frequency" of that artwork. Every grain pattern is a fingerprint of nature, and every species carries its own traditional and metaphysical significance.

Here is why I work with these specific woods and what they bring to the pieces I create for you.

Hardwoods available with LaserTrees

Maple (The Tree of Tolerance)

Maple is my choice for clean, high-contrast designs. Symbolically, I view it as a tree of strength, endurance, and generosity. It represents balance and practicality, acting as a grounding force for complex geometric patterns.

  • Element: Water

  • Focus: Offering, Promise, and Practicality.

Birch (The Tree of Inception)

I love working with Birch because of its history as a "pioneer" species—it is often the first to grow back after a forest fire. To me, Birch represents new beginnings, fertility, and the discipline required to start a new project. I often use it for pieces intended to spark creativity or purification.

  • Element: Water

  • Focus: Inception, Service, and New Beginnings.

Black Walnut (The Tree of Transition)

The rich, chocolate tones of Walnut make it one of my favorite premium materials. Metaphysically, I find it assists in clarity and focus. It is a powerful tool for those looking to let go of unwanted associations or make a major life transition. It serves as a constant reminder of gratitude and the gathering of energy.

  • Element: Fire

  • Focus: Clarity, Focus, and Shifting Perspectives.

African Padauk (The Tree of Vitality)

When you see that lustrous, natural orange-red hue in my work, that is Padauk. I use this wood when a piece needs to radiate power and strength. It draws heavily from the element of fire and provides a sense of vitality and control, even as its energy feels constantly shifting and alive.

  • Element: Fire

  • Focus: Power, Vitality, and Shifting Energy.

Cherry (The Tree of Rebirth)

Cherry has a beautiful way of darkening and becoming richer over time. I associate it with strong expression and new awakenings. It is the wood I turn to when I want a piece to embody compassion and the gentle energy of rebirth.

  • Element: Earth/Fire

  • Focus: Compassion, Rebirth, and Awakening.

A Note on Sustainability

I believe that for art to be truly "high-vibe," it must be ethical. I source my hardwoods from suppliers who prioritize sustainability. Because I use real wood, you will see knots, variations in grain, and unique color shifts. I don't see these as flaws; I see them as the proof that your piece was once a living part of the earth.

All that said, I did find out that Padauk isn't the most ethical wood to use as it comes from a threatened species. I will not order this hardwood again so once my stock runs out, it's gone from my availability.
